What Is Root Canal Treatment?

A root canal is a remedy for the inflamed, contaminated or dead pulp of a tooth. Pulp is the soft material composed of blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue at the center of a tooth. The pulp chamber is the hollow portion that holds the pulp in the middle of the tooth, and the chamber continues down canals reaching through the end of the roots into the surrounding bone holding the tooth in place. There is more than one root canal in certain roots, but all have at least one canal.

Does A Root Canal Hurt?

A root canal should not be more painful than a normal dental operation, such as a filling or removing a wisdom tooth, because patients are given local anesthesia. However, a root canal is usually a little numb after the operation and possibly slightly tender after the numbness wears off. The tenderness may last for a few days as the tooth begins healing.

How Do You Know if You Need a
Root Canal?

There are several signs you may need a root canal:

  • A tooth that is injured, cracked or affected by a deep cavity could require root canal.

  • If your teeth are sensitive to hot and cold with a lingering reaction to temperature even after eliminating the sensation.

  • If a tooth's dental abscess and throbbing are present.

  • Severe pain while biting or chewing.

  • Pimples on the gums or gums that are swollen and tender.

  • A chipped or cracked tooth.

Is It Possible to Return to Work after a Root Canal?

While you are more likely to be numb for 2-4 hours after the operation, most patients can return to school or function immediately after a root canal. It is recommended against eating, however, until the numbness is entirely gone.
