How to Take Care of Your Dentures
The aim of dentures is to make it possible to talk, smile and eat naturally in the patients with teeth loss (total or partial). However, these things can only be done if you are comfortable with dentures and maintain them. Learning how dentures are cleaned is important if good day hygiene is to be maintained, but sometimes additional measures can be necessary to remove the harder-to-remove bacteria.
How Food Is Collected in Dentures?
Every time you eat, for several reasons, teeth may collect food particles:
Food drifted to your mouth floor could land under lower tooth denture and become trapped.
Debris which are pushed up and back as you chew and swallow may spread from palate to upper dentures.
Dentures, however, take up a good amount of space in the mouth, so you will feel more likely than someone with natural teeth to have food collecting under them.
Dentures must be rinsed after eating. Use water to remove food and other loose particles. You might want to put a towel or water in the counter, or put it in the sink so the teeth will not break down if you drop it.
Carefully handle your permanent dentures. Be sure that when cleaning, you neither bend the material nor damage the clasps.
After removing your dentures, clean your mouth. Use a soft-bristle toothbrush to clear your tongue, cheeks and roof of your mouth. Do not use any denture cleaner inside the mouth.
At least daily brush your dentures. Take and clean them gently every day. Soak them to remove food, plaque in recommended solutions and clean with a soft brush. Clean the brush which fit your gums to remove any remaining food.
Overnight soak the dentures. In order to preserve their shape, most dentures must be moist. Place them in water or a mild solution overnight. Follow the cleaning and soaking instructions of the manufacturer.
Thoroughly rinse dentures before putting them back into your mouth, particularly if a solution is used. These solutions may contain harmful substances which, when swallowed, cause vomiting, pain or nausea.
Regular dental inspections are recommended. How often you can see your dentist for examination and professional cleaning, will your dentist recommend. Your dentist can help prevent discomfort, as well as verify that the inside of your mouth is healthy.
