5 Ways Cosmetic Dentistry Can Help Better Your Smile

We get asked this a lot – ‘how do I improve my smile?’ Well, there are many things you can do for a prettier smile. Our cosmetic dentistry services at Comprehensive Family Dentistry can make your teeth whiter, straighter, and stronger. There are both immediate and long-term benefits of cosmetic dental procedures. Below are a few procedures that are popular among our clients.

#1 Teeth Whitening

A recent study discovered that nearly half of the people who felt their teeth’s appearance could be improved were explicitly worried about discoloration. Today, the dental care market has caught onto the demand and come up with a large plethora of at-home teeth whitening products - from toothpaste to whitening strips. But you must know that the teeth whitening procedure at the dentist’s is hugely different from the at-home tips and tricks.

Dentists use stronger bleaching agents along with lasers and special lights for more effective results. They also use custom mouth trays that ensure a better application of the bleach than what you would have achieved at home.

#2 Dental Crowns

If you cracked your teeth in an accident or got a large filling done, dental crowns can be used to restore your smile’s appearance and strength. Even if you don’t have cracked and chipped teeth, dental crowns can still be used to improve the look of mishappen teeth. At first, the tooth is shaped to fit the crown. The shaping usually involves filling the tooth; then a temporary crown is placed over the tooth. Simultaneously, the dentist will also build a custom-made, permanent crown. Once the permanent crown is ready, the dentist will replace the makeshift one.

#3 Tooth Straightening

Even until a few years back, tooth straightening was done using wires and brackets. More commonly known as braces, these were fitted onto the teeth and left there for a couple of years to coax the teeth into their supposed alignment. While braces are still used for more severe alignment issues, we have more comfortable options today like Invisalign.

A scan is taken of the teeth, and a custom pair of Invisalign aligners are manufactured. These aligners are transparent. You will no longer feel self-conscious about having visible braces. They can also be removed to brush the teeth, ensuring comfort and better overall dental care.

#4 Dental Implants

Dental implants are a replacement for tooth roots that are placed into the socket to support a crown. Implants are mostly used to cover missing tooth or tooth that has been extracted. A titanium post is implanted into the tooth socket, and the jaw gradually heals around it, securing the post into place. Once the dentist is sure the implant won’t move around; an abutment is attached to it. Finally, a dental crown will be attached to the abutment. Dental implants are more expensive than dentures but are incredibly more comfortable and natural looking.

#5 Dental Veneers

Dental veneers are another popular cosmetic dentistry practice that treats chipped, discolored, and mishappened teeth. The dentist files a thin layer of the tooth away to make space for the fittings. Then an impression of the teeth is taken for custom production of the dental veneers.

Once the manufacturing process is over, the fittings are attached on top of the teeth. The last step is to clean and etch the teeth such that the veneers are cemented to the teeth. A special light is used to activate the cement.

Veneers are very popular on social media today.
